Letter to the Editor #1 Judy Fenton
April, 2010

Dear Editor,
Re: Darcy Goodrichs' letter

It is very interesting to me that any beef producer would take exception to Alberta Beef Producers promoting our industry as healthy and sustainable!

Firstly, the beef producers I know, that are making their living producing beef, certainly do not intentionally work towards supplying an unhealthy product! The majority of cattle producers left in the business after the trials of the last seven years, are not in the cattle industry because they dislike livestock. These producers are working towards a sustainable industry for future generations.

Health standards within the plants in Alberta are amongst the highest in the world, therefore I believe that they are trying to maintain a safe healthy product.

Part of Alberta Beef Producers' mandate is to promote Alberta beef within the province and to promote Canadian beef throughout the world. Our neighboring provinces have similar mandates.

Without a doubt there may be a few people with livestock as a sideline, that may through lack of knowledge or concern for the industry, do some things that are not the norm within the livestock industry be it cattle, horses, sheep etc. Alberta Beef Producers recognize that there are producers that need guidance on various issues and choose to try to provide help on improving these situations rather than have them reflect on the entire industry. Do you think that by making them public, we would sell more beef? Would it be more appropriate if an industry organization were to point to all or any flaws that the industry might encounter?

The comments in the letter to the editor were very disturbing coming from someone professing to be knowledgeable of the industry and whose off farm job is paid for by the industry!

ABP is a democratic organization. ANY producer can sign a nomination form by August 31st and stand for election by their peers at the fall meetings. The fall meetings are open to all producers and are the forum for resolutions to be taken forward to give direction to the organization. The opportunity is yours!
