Youth Pasture School at County of Paintearth by Bonnie Warnyca June, 2010
The County of Paintearth held their first Youth Pasture School in late April and 14, 12-16 year olds showed up to learn about animal welfare and pasture management. "It was an interesting day," says Quinton Beaumont, Assistant Agricultural Fieldman for the County. "The kids really participated with lots of questions and interest in the information. They told me they wanted to learn even more about the different plants within a pasture setting. The County already runs annual pasture schools for adults and next year, we will include a youth only field trip and a pasture walk to identify the many different grasses in a healthy pasture environment. We're also working with the 4-H organization to include this field day in their points system as well as the Green Certificate Program to include this workshop for credits. So, hopefully, by next year we will be able to offer that to any 4-H and Green Certificate kids that attend." |
